QR codes are on everything — restaurant menus, product labels, business cards, event tickets, WiFi passwords, payment terminals. But how do you actually scan them? The good news: your phone can do it without any extra app.
How to Scan on iPhone
Method 1: Camera App (Easiest)
- Open the Camera app
- Point it at the QR code
- A notification banner appears at the top
- Tap the banner to open the link
That is it. No extra app needed — the Camera app has built-in QR scanning since iOS 11.
Method 2: Control Center Scanner
- Open Control Center (swipe down from top-right)
- Tap the QR code scanner icon
- Point at the code
- It scans and opens automatically
If you do not see the QR icon in Control Center: Settings → Control Center → add Code Scanner.
Method 3: From a Photo
If the QR code is in a screenshot or saved image:
- Open the photo in Photos
- Long-press on the QR code in the image
- Tap Open in Safari
Or use Live Text: open the photo, tap the QR code, and iOS recognizes it automatically.
How to Scan on Android
Method 1: Camera App
Most Android phones (2018+) have built-in QR scanning:
- Open the Camera app
- Point at the QR code
- A link or popup appears
- Tap to open
If your camera does not detect QR codes, enable it: Camera settings → Scan QR codes → On.
Method 2: Google Lens
- Open the Google app or Google Lens
- Tap the camera/lens icon
- Point at the QR code
- Tap the result
Method 3: Quick Settings
Some Android phones have a QR scanner in Quick Settings:
- Swipe down twice from the top
- Look for QR Scanner or Scan QR code
- Tap it and point your camera
Method 4: From a Photo
- Open the image in Google Photos
- Tap Lens (the Google Lens icon)
- It detects and reads the QR code
How to Scan on Computer (No Camera)
If the QR code is on your screen (in an email, website, or document) and you need to read it without a phone:
Chrome Extension
Install "QR Code Reader" extension → right-click any QR code image → "Read QR Code"
Online Tool
- Take a screenshot of the QR code
- Upload to an online QR reader
- Get the decoded content
Manual Decode
Right-click the QR code image → "Copy image address" or "Save image" — sometimes the URL is already in the image filename or alt text.
What Can QR Codes Do?

| Opens email composer | |
| Text | Displays the text |

QR Code Safety
Before You Scan
- Check the source — do not scan random QR codes from stickers on street poles or public restrooms
- Preview the URL — most phones show the URL before opening. Check if it looks legitimate
- Be suspicious of stickers — scammers place their QR stickers over legitimate ones (e.g., on parking meters, restaurant tables)
- Never enter credentials — if a QR code leads to a login page, go to the website directly instead
Red Flags
- QR code is a sticker placed over another QR code
- URL looks suspicious or misspelled
- The link asks for personal information immediately
- The QR code is on an unsolicited flyer or handout
