"What is my IP address?" is one of the most common searches on the internet. Whether you need your IP for a tech support call, want to verify your VPN is working, or are curious about what information websites can see about you — this guide has you covered.

What Websites See When You Visit
Every time you visit a website, the server can see:
| Information | How Accurate | Can You Hide It? |
|---|---|---|
| Your public IP address | Exact | Yes (VPN, Tor, proxy) |
| City / region | ~25 mile radius | Yes (VPN) |
| Country | Very accurate | Yes (VPN) |
| ISP name | Exact | Yes (VPN) |
| Connection type | Exact | No |
What They Cannot See
- Your name or identity
- Your exact street address
- Other devices on your network
- Your browsing history
- Files on your computer
Your IP reveals your approximate location and ISP — nothing more. The "someone can hack you with your IP" fear is mostly a myth for regular home users.
How to Check If Your VPN Is Working
The most common reason people check their IP: to verify their VPN is actually hiding their real address.
- Disconnect your VPN — visit What's My IP and note your real IP and location
- Connect your VPN — refresh the page
- Compare — the IP and location should change to the VPN server's location
If you still see your real IP or ISP name, your VPN is leaking. Run a full check with our VPN Leak Test which also tests DNS leaks and WebRTC leaks.

Common IPs People Look Up

Cloudflare DNS | Fast DNS server |
9.9.9.9 |
Quad9 DNS | Security-focused DNS |

Why Your IP Changes
Most home internet connections use dynamic IP addresses — your ISP assigns a new one periodically (every few hours to days). This means:
- Your IP today might be different tomorrow
- Rebooting your router can trigger a new IP
- This is normal and intentional
If you need a permanent IP (for hosting, remote access, or cameras), ask your ISP for a static IP (usually $5-15/month extra).
How to Hide Your IP
| Method | Privacy Level | Speed Impact | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPN | High | Moderate (10-20% slower) | $3-12/month |
| Tor Browser | Very high | Significant (much slower) | Free |
| Proxy | Medium | Varies | Free-$10/month |
| Mobile data | Basic (different IP than WiFi) | None | Your data plan |
A VPN is the best balance of privacy, speed, and usability for most people. Verify it is working with our VPN Leak Test.
IP Address FAQ
Can someone hack me with my IP? Very unlikely. Your router's firewall blocks incoming connections by default. An IP alone does not give access to your devices.
Can I change my IP? Restart your router (may get a new dynamic IP), use a VPN (masks your real IP), or request a different IP from your ISP.
IPv4 vs IPv6 — what is the difference?
IPv4 looks like 192.168.1.1. IPv6 looks like 2001:db8::1. Both serve the same purpose but IPv6 has vastly more addresses. Most sites support both.
Does incognito mode hide my IP? No. Incognito mode only prevents your browser from saving history and cookies locally. Websites still see your real IP. Only a VPN hides your IP.
