Bluetooth should be simple — turn it on, pair, done. But in reality, Bluetooth problems are incredibly common. Devices do not show up, pairing fails, audio cuts out, connections drop randomly.
This guide covers every common Bluetooth problem and fix on every device.
Universal First Steps (Try These First)
These fix 70% of Bluetooth problems on any device:
- Turn Bluetooth off and on (on both devices)
- Restart both devices (phone AND headphones/speaker/keyboard)
- Make sure devices are close — within 3 feet for initial pairing
- Remove old pairing and re-pair — forget the device and start fresh
- Charge both devices — low battery causes Bluetooth issues
Windows
Bluetooth Not Turning On
- Check if Bluetooth is enabled: Settings → Bluetooth & devices → toggle ON
- Check if the adapter is enabled: Device Manager → Bluetooth → right-click adapter → Enable
- Run troubleshooter: Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Bluetooth
- Check Bluetooth service: Services app → "Bluetooth Support Service" → make sure it is Running and set to Automatic
Device Not Showing Up
- Put the device in pairing mode (check its manual — usually hold the power button for 5 seconds)
- Settings → Bluetooth → "Add device" → Bluetooth
- Make sure the device is not already paired to another phone/computer nearby
Connected But No Audio
- Right-click the speaker icon (taskbar) → Sound settings
- Under "Output" → select your Bluetooth device
- If it shows as "Connected" but not under output: remove it, restart, re-pair
- Update Bluetooth driver: Device Manager → Bluetooth → right-click → Update driver
Bluetooth Keeps Disconnecting
- Device Manager → Bluetooth → right-click adapter → Properties → Power Management → UNCHECK "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
- Same for the specific Bluetooth device under "Bluetooth" in Device Manager
- Update Bluetooth drivers
Mac
Bluetooth Not Working
- Turn Bluetooth off and on: menu bar Bluetooth icon → toggle
- Reset Bluetooth module: hold Shift + Option → click the Bluetooth menu bar icon → "Reset the Bluetooth module" (older macOS) or "Debug" → "Reset"
- Delete Bluetooth preferences:
sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
Restart your Mac.
AirPods Issues
- Put AirPods in the case → close lid → wait 30 seconds → open and try pairing
- Settings → Bluetooth → click (i) next to AirPods → Forget → re-pair
- Reset AirPods: hold the button on the case for 15 seconds until the light flashes amber then white
iPhone
Bluetooth Not Connecting
- Settings → Bluetooth → toggle off/on
- Forget the device: Settings → Bluetooth → tap (i) next to device → Forget This Device → re-pair
- Reset Network Settings: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Reset → Reset Network Settings (this also resets WiFi passwords)
- Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait 10 seconds, off
Audio Playing from Phone Instead of Bluetooth
- Open Control Center → long-press the audio card → tap the Bluetooth device icon
- Or: Settings → Bluetooth → tap the device → make sure it shows "Connected"
Android
Cannot Find Devices
- Settings → Connected devices → Pair new device
- Make sure the other device is in pairing mode
- Turn Location ON — Android requires location permission for Bluetooth scanning
- Check app permissions: Settings → Apps → Bluetooth → Permissions → Location ON
Paired But Not Connected
- Settings → Connected devices → tap the device → Connect
- If it fails: Forget → restart phone → re-pair
- Clear Bluetooth cache: Settings → Apps → show system apps → Bluetooth → Storage → Clear cache
Audio Stuttering/Cutting Out
- Developer Options → Bluetooth Audio Codec → try SBC instead of AAC/LDAC
- Developer Options → Bluetooth Audio Sample Rate → 44.1 kHz
- Keep phone and Bluetooth device on the same side of your body (your body blocks the signal)
Common Bluetooth Problems
| Problem | Most Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Device not discoverable | Not in pairing mode | Hold power button 5 sec |
| Pairing fails | Already paired elsewhere | Forget on the other device first |
| Connected, no audio | Wrong output selected | Change audio output in settings |
| Audio stuttering | Interference or distance | Move closer, reduce obstacles |
| Keeps disconnecting | Power saving | Disable power management for BT |
| One earbud not working | Earbud needs reset | Put both in case, reset |
| Bluetooth missing from settings | Driver/hardware issue | Update drivers, check Device Manager |
Bluetooth Range and Interference
| Bluetooth Version | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Bluetooth 4.0 | ~30 feet (10m) |
| Bluetooth 5.0 | ~100 feet (30m) |
| Bluetooth 5.3 | ~100+ feet (30m+) |
Things that reduce range:
